Amazing journey of discovery and perseverance.

Review:

Neil Peart, talented drummer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band Rush, and his wife lost their 18 year old daughter in an auto accident in 1997. Almost a year to the day later, Neil lost his wife to cancer.

Alone and struggling with grief, unsure whether he could continue on in life without them Neil set off on an amazing journey of rediscovery and healing.

In this daring journey Neil, with his phantoms in tow, decides to venture into the world on his BMW R1100GS motorcycle. He travels northwest through Canada, up to Alaska, then south through British Columbia, into the United States and onward.

In all, he covers 55,000 miles throughout North America, including Mexico and Belize, on a motorcycle.

I was left with an incredible admiration and respect for this fellow, a man who's lyrics and music have left a lasting impression on as. He paints a wonderful picture with words, describing details of the landscapes and people, and his emotions throughout this adventure.

Neil also also shares historic anecdotes of the various locations he travels through. He shows great interest in the places he visits and he shares that interest with us. Reading his tale raised my awareness, bringing me closer to my own world through the illustration of his.

There are many comical moments in this book as well, including the time he locked himself out of a small inn he had stopped at, when the owner had let him stay there even though they were closed up. Neil was the only one in that remote location. How he gets back in is comical. I also laughed out loud when I read his take on the big bird he collides with on the highway. He is an entertaining writer with a unique style.

While reading Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road, I learned many things about Canada, the US and Mexico. Neil describes wonderful places, colorful people, and great experiences all while wrestling with his emotions and sharing them openly with the reader.

This book is a true adventure and an eye opener. Neil does not cease to amaze. His writing truly inspires while providing much needed laughter and sometimes cleansing tears.
