Directed, written by, and starring Jon Favreau, Chef is a comical and engaging look into the life of Carl Casper, a hardworking head chef at an upscale restaurant, where he has garnered some critical cred for his mad skills in creating top notch cuisine. For a special event to wow a certain critic Carl has developed some creative new dishes, unfortunately his boss, restaurant owner played by Dustin Hoffman, orders him to play it safe by serving the same menu they did the last time.
Carl quits leaving the task to the remaining line chefs, but still the well known food critic, Ramsey Michel (perfomed by Oliver Platt), drags Carl's reputation through the sewer anyway after dining on the same boring fare. Carl creates a scene in the restaurant, berating the critic for his lack of understanding of the real blood, sweat and tears that go into being a successful head chef. The rant is recorded on a patron's cell phone and goes viral, bringing Carl a slew of unexpected publicity.
The rest of the film follows carl as he pieces together his relationship with his young son, his ex-wife, and follows his heart back to cooking on his own terms, with renewed fervor and vision.
Chef is an inspiring film that speaks to individuality and perseverance against the odds.
