TV Show Review:
This is a great 80s retro horror/sci-fi show. It paints a colorful tale, bringing back fond memories of two-way radios, after dinner adventures on bikes, secret clubs and the mysteries we kids with active imaginations always wish we really had to solve.
Stranger Things kind of plays like a Stephen King flick, with rich characters, fun personalities and well placed humor, It delivers on the thrills and spooky factor too. Outstanding cinematography accompanied by a soundtrack scored on synthesizer, reminiscent of Tangerine Dream, the preeminent prog-synth soundtrack group of the 70s and 80s. It all works.
The show delivers, with compelling mysteries, effective scares, and fantastic visuals that bring the most disturbing things to life. It's like a dark Alice In Wonderland meets Monster Squad mixed with a touch of War of the Worlds, and then some. There are so many things tossed in here that I'm surprised the series works as well as it does. But I guess what keeps us coming back is that notion that all of this mayhem must boil down to just one evil that the characters will ultimately have to confront.
My wife and I were drawn in to the first season pretty quickly, though I must admit we gave each other a shrug when we first hit play, thinking it might not capture our interest. It did. We binged the first season and followed that up with a binge of the second season as well. We had both done in a matter of weeks, and we are anticipating season three, which has just dropped so I'll need to post an update once we've seen that.
Stranger Things is slated for a fourth season but the Duffer brothers have conceded that they don't envision a fifth season for the series.
